Mary Barnes
Profile:
Mary is the newest member of our team, joining us in 2007. She
grew up in Hampshire and spent most of her childhood holidays
on the Island. When she was 20 years old she left England and
spent the next 12 years working her way around the world.
Mary came
back from Australia overland. Amongst several highlights were
watching the sunrise on Mount Everest, travelling through
Afghanistan and camping in the Kyber Pass.
Mary moved
to the Island in 1979 and lived in Bembridge until 1991.
She spent the next 12 years in Alberta, Canada and while there
she enjoyed Horse riding, cross-country skiing and hiking.
Mary returned to the Island in 2003, renewed her membership
with the I.W. Natural History and Archaeology Society and
joined the Isle of Wight Ramblers.
She lead walks for the I.W. Ramblers and is a Footpath
Representative for Sandown & Shanklin.
Mary monitors approximately 56 footpaths and reports problems
like overgrown paths, fallen trees blocked access etc to I.W.
Rights of Way.
Mary is a volunteer helper with the I.W. Branch of Riding for
the Disabled and enjoys church bell ringing and gardening.
